Africa - Gambia - Kerr Layen - 2025 Plan to make the village of 1400 People fully food sustainable for life.
To turn 36 Hectares of land into rice fields and producing at least 720 sacks of rice. (12 Sacks of rice per family, 1 sack a month)

The beauty of this project is, the village will collect rice seed from this years crop, to use to duplicate the project every year, with no extra investment from us.

2025 Plan for Food Sustainability in Kerr Layen Village, Gambia

In 2025, the goal is to make Kerr Layen, a village of 1,400 people, fully food-sustainable for life. This initiative will transform 36 hectares of land into thriving rice fields, producing a minimum of 720 sacks of rice—providing 12 sacks per family (1 sack per month).

The most remarkable aspect of this project is its long-term sustainability. The village will harvest rice seeds from each year's crop, enabling them to replicate the process annually without requiring additional investment from us.

I can not believe within 8 weeks of launching this project, our incredible network achieved this dream. Im heading out there in March 2025 to talk to the village and help them to visualise what this will mean for their future, I can not wait to see their faces.

Each hectare requires 2 sacks of rice seed at £24.20 per sack, which totals £48.40 per hectare. For 36 hectares, the cost will be:

  • 36 hectares x £48.40 = £1,742.40.

Similarly, each hectare requires 2 sacks of fertiliser at £24.20 per sack, totaling £48.40 per hectare. For 36 hectares, the fertiliser cost will be:

  • 36 hectares x £48.40 = £1,742.40.

Total for seeds and fertiliser: £1,742.40 + £1,742.40 = £3,484.80.

Additionally, the cost to rent a tractor (including fuel) is £27.50 per hectare, which totals:

  • £27.50 per hectare x 36 hectares = £990.00.

Total cost for seeds, fertiliser, and tractor rental: £3,484.80 + £990.00 = £4,474.80.

To purchase rice seed at market prices, the cost per sack is £27.50. For 720 sacks, the total cost would be:

  • 720 sacks x £27.50 = £19,800.00.

By using their own seed, the village will save:

  • £19,800.00 - £4,474.80 = £15,325.20.

In the second year, the rice seed will be collected from the 2025 crop. The costs for fertiliser and tractor rental will remain the same as the first year:

  • Fertiliser: £1,742.40

  • Tractor rental: £990.00

  • Total: £1,742.40 + £990.00 = £2,732.40.

The village will need to contribute £2,732.40 for the second year and every year forward.
